If you have shade in your garden, don’t insist on choosing the classic plants: choose these that are beautiful, fragrant and colorful. Here are what they are.

Sometimes you may find it difficult to even grow a simple pot of basil on the balcony. You must know that it is not you who does not have a green thumb but most likely it is the conditions of the place, the balcony or the garden, which are not suitable. In fact, for example, basil needs sunlight and if your garden is in the shade you can’t do anything about it.
After several attempts, and even several failures, you will understand that your garden or your corner of the balcony does not have the conditions for plants to grow and live. If there is shade in your garden, you need to choose certain plants that do not like the sun and light and instead prefer to stay in the shade.

Only then will you not have withered flowers and leaves and plants that die immediately. You will have to study a sort of shady garden with the right plants so that they live healthy and strong. Usually among these plants there are those that live in the woods. But let’s see what are the problems of a shaded garden and what are the plants you can choose.
Shade in your garden: how to do it
As we said, if your garden is exposed to the North and has a lot of shade, do not choose plants that instead want sunlight to live because they will have a short life. Choose plants that love shade, there are different types and you will not have to give up the typical color of the flowers.
In fact, there are many shade-loving plants that have colorful leaves. From light to dark colors and from green/yellow to brown/red. In short, do not give up because that small land will not remain empty at all. Then, when a garden is not exposed to the sun, it will also have fewer weeds, which can be an advantage.

Certainly not only advantages but we also have a disadvantage. In fact, since there is no sun when you water the soil, the water takes longer to dry. The consequence is that the plant could catch some diseases such as fungal. These include, for example, powdery mildew, rust or scab.
So don’t insist on choosing plants that will die but rather choose from those that will resist. Below, in the next paragraph, we will see a list of plants that you can choose from. In this way you will have a beautiful garden even without the classic plants chosen by everyone.
Suitable plants
Here are the plants to put in the garden in the shade, they are also colorful:
- Helleborus: also called Christmas rose, it is a plant that lives well in low light conditions. If planted in spring or autumn, you will be able to see flowering even in December. This plant offers very particular flowers of different colors, from white to pink or even red or purple. The foliage is very dark and does not require much care.

- Astilbe: they have both flowers and colorful leaves but it should not be neglected. In fact, in the months when there are no flowers, there will be leaves to color the garden. It is a plant native to Asia and North America.
- Bergenia: This is a perennial plant with rounded leaves. The color of these ranges from light green to dark green. In the cold, however, they take on a bronze red color. In spring they also bloom with small flowers.
