Plants keep us company and we often choose them based on the flowers they produce. Orchid lovers certainly want to see them bloom as much as possible, but sometimes the flowers are slow to arrive. A situation that can be solved with a very particular type of fertilizer to create with a few ingredients that you probably have at home but don’t know so well that they work.

It’s good for your orchid

When you buy a plant, you always try to give it everything it needs to live and thrive at its best. Sometimes, however, it seems that there is no way and the flowers do not arrive. It could be a nutrient deficiency.

The homemade solution that works is an onion and rice infusion. A good combination in the kitchen, but also good for your plants. Onions, and even garlic, are great for fighting bacterial infections. Therefore, a regular bath in water in which the onion has been infused protects the plant over time.

Rice, on the other hand, is useful as a stimulant and is rich in nutrients. One solution might be to use boiling water for the rice, being careful not to add salt. Alternatively, simply put three tablespoons of rice in a quart of hot water and wait.

How to Use Natural Fertilizers

We talk about onions and their properties and we talk about rice. But how are these natural fertilizers used? The first thing to know is that, compared to prepared products found in nurseries and garden centers, nutrients take a while to dissolve in water.

If you want to use onion-based water, you should let the bulb soak for at least 24 hours. The same goes for rice: the longer you let it soak, the more nutrients it will absorb and then release into the plant. However, it is important to create the right amount of natural fertilizer, as it cannot be stored and must be used fresh.

Once a month, you’ll need to brew your infusions to spread through the roots. To help your orchid grow even larger, in addition to using an onion and rice infusion, which you can combine in a liquid, you can also clean the leaves by soaking a cotton pad in the same solution and running it over and under the leaves all the time.

In this way, the mechanical action and properties of the substances dissolved in the water will help you fight any type of bacterial or fungal infection. The alternative to use is also the immersion bath. You can soak your plants in this powerful solution for 10 minutes each month and let the liquid reach the roots through the pot.
