Tired of always coming across avocados that never ripen or avocados that are completely blackened inside? We asked our discoverer for his best tips for choosing the right one every time. Here’s his secret.

Avocado is a key ingredient in our summer recipes. Delicious in salad, guacamole or even in a smoothie, it has many health benefits. It is rich in good fats and is very nutritious. Unfortunately, it is one of the most difficult fruits and vegetables to choose in the supermarket.

Any other time? It will be inedible, either because it is too hard and will never ripen, or on the contrary because it is too ripe. What is more disappointing when preparing guacamole than ending up with an avocado that is rotten inside or hard as a rock…

While many people think that tasting all the avocados on the rack is the best solution, unfortunately, apart from damaging all the avocados, this will not help you find a ripe one every time. But how to choose it well? This is the question we asked our insider, and he revealed his different tips. Among the most well-known ones are:

  • Color: If the skin is bright green, let the avocado sit; it is not ripe. For a ready-to-eat avocado, choose one with dark skin. The color should be uniform. If it is still light green on one end, let it sit again.
  • Texture: Prefer an avocado with textured skin rather than smooth skin. If it is smooth and shiny it is not ripe.
  • Appearance: Once you’ve picked an avocado with dark, rough skin, you can do another check. Gently squeeze the avocado with your thumb in three or four places to see if it’s fully ripe. Your finger should sink in slightly, without leaving a mark on the skin (otherwise it’s overripe).

He also revealed a little-known technique, the peduncle technique. This is the foolproof technique for choosing your lawyer. To do this, proceed in stages.

  1. Apply some pressure at the base of the stem. The avocado should be neither too soft nor too hard.
  2. Remove the stem and look at the color underneath. If the color is between yellow and light green, the avocado is not yet ripe. Conversely, if the small circle is black, the avocado is overripe. Choose a fruit that is very green under the stem.
