It crisps our potatoes, bakes our cakes and roasts our chicken… The oven is essential in the kitchen. To keep it in good condition and to ensure it works optimally, it is important to maintain and clean it regularly. Here are our little tips for cleaning it effectively and effortlessly.
How often should I deep clean my oven?
It is recommended to thoroughly clean the oven as often as necessary or at least every three months. It is also advisable to clean grease stains and various splashes after each use, because cleaning an appliance maintained daily is of course less restrictive.
Clean your oven with baking soda step by step

Here’s our tip of the day! Use a baking soda paste to remove oven grime and bad odors.
Step 1: Get the necessary ingredients and equipment.
- Bicarbonate ;
- Water;
- Rubber gloves;
- White vinegar ;
- A spray bottle;
- A rag.
Step 2: Remove the oven racks.
- Remove oven racks;
- Place them on old newspapers or a used towel to avoid dirtying your kitchen floor;
- Empty the oven of all other items such as the grill or other items.
Step 3: Make a baking soda paste
- Mix 12 cl of water with 79 g of baking soda to obtain a paste ;
- Double the dose if necessary, as all dirty oven walls need to be covered.
Step 4: Apply the paste to the inside of the oven
- Put on rubber gloves to protect your hands;
- Apply your paste to the inside of the oven, making sure not to miss any areas;
- Focus on tough stains.
For your information
When in contact with fat, the paste will turn a brownish color.
Step 5: Let everything sit for at least 12 hours.
- Check that you have covered the entire interior of the oven;
- Leave the baking soda paste on for at least 12 hours or overnight.
Step 6: Clean the oven racks.
- For this step use a bathtub filled with hot water ;
- Place used towels in the bottom of the latter to protect it;
- If the grates are very dirty, add 60 ml of pure, unscented liquid Castile soap to the hot water;
- Soak the grates in the tub for at least two hours;
- After two hours, scrub the grates with a scrubbing brush;
- Rinse.
Step 7: Remove the baking soda paste
- Back in the oven after 12 hours of waiting! Using a damp cloth, clean the baking soda paste and with it the residue embedded in the inside of the oven ;
- Use a spatula or scraper if the paste is not enough to break up all the stubborn dirt;
- Gently remove residue to avoid scratching your device.
For your information
Do not use scouring pads that may damage your oven.
Step 8: Spray vinegar inside the oven

- Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle;
- Spray the inside of the oven.
For your information
White vinegar has strong antibacterial cleaning properties. It will form a foam when it comes into contact with the baking soda left on the walls and will help remove stubborn stains.
Step 9: Clean the inside of the oven glass.
- Prepare the baking soda paste again;
- Spread your paste over the entire surface of the window;
- Let it rest for about thirty minutes ;
- Remove the paste with a damp cloth or paper towel.
Step 10: Clean the oven door and control knobs
- Carefully wipe a damp microfiber cloth over the outside of the oven door;
- Prepare a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar ;
- Spray a cloth with your mixture and wipe the entire surface. Do not spray the buttons and panels directly! The product risks leaking and causing a short circuit;
- Scrub until there is no more dirt left.
How to clean glass oven doors with baking soda?
Unlike oven racks, the glass door of an oven requires a gentler cleaning technique to avoid scratching it. So avoid using harsh chemicals and opt for a less aggressive method.
- Make a thick paste of baking soda and water and then spread it generously over the window. After 20 minutes, wipe with a microfibre cloth and rinse with plenty of water. Finally, dry the surface until it shines;
- If you don’t have this white powder available, spray soapy water or a dedicated oven cleaning product to degrease your glass door. Finally, use a glass cleaner or a little diluted vinegar, as suggested above, or diluted lemon juice and wipe with a soft cloth;
- To clean the oven door between the two glass panels, here’s what you need to do to clean it all:
- Open the oven door and support it with your legs;
- Unscrew the top of the door to access the space between the two glass panels;
- Use a vacuum cleaner with a small attachment to suck up debris;
- Remove any grease residue with a sponge or cloth soaked in white vinegar and water.
- Screw the windows back in and put everything back in place by tightening the hinges.
How to keep your oven clean between cleanings?

Prevention is better than cure! Maintain your oven daily before it becomes completely clogged. Cover your pans with a lid or foil before putting them in the oven to prevent grease splatters, and place a baking sheet on the bottom rack when you put the dish in the oven to catch anything that might overflow.
If there are any spills inside the oven, act quickly by sprinkling table salt over them to absorb them, and wipe everything up with a damp sponge or cloth (once the oven has cooled of course, to avoid burning yourself).
