To ensure that your clothes are soft, there’s nothing better than using fabric softener when you start the machine. But the fabric softeners sold in supermarkets are not always so practical, even the most expensive ones! Some are full of chemical components and can cause allergies or irritation in the most sensitive people. But don’t panic, we have the solution: natural alternatives!
1. Epsom salt and baking soda

To restore softness to your clothes, nothing could be simpler. Simply prepare your own natural fabric softener, based on coarse salt, baking soda and essential oils. This solution will make your clothes and bath towels fresher and, above all, softer!
How to proceed?
- Boil a glass of water and let it cool for a few minutes;
- Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of coarse salt or Epsom salt;
- Stir until the salt is completely dissolved in the water;
- Let it sit for 15 minutes and add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil of your choice to your mixture. You can opt for lavender, mint or even lemon.
- Then add the equivalent of 70 grams of baking soda. In addition to being an excellent softener, baking soda removes stains and limescale.
- Then pour the fabric softener into a bottle so you can store it and use it at your convenience.
For your information
You can keep your fabric softener for more than 2 weeks. The longer you let the product sit, the more pleasant its scent will be.
2. Salt
Here is a second salt-based tip for silky soft clothes. You just need to follow the steps mentioned below:
How to proceed?
- Before starting your machine, you will only have to pour 2 tablespoons of your natural fabric softener into the detergent drawer of your machine and not directly into the drum.
- You can also, if you wash your clothes by hand, add a tablespoon of your homemade fabric softener to the bowl of water and let your things soak in it.
- Finally, you will only need to rinse your clothes with clean water. Your clothes will be soft and smell good.
3. White vinegar
As you know, water contains lime , which can easily permeate the fabric of your clothes. Over time, they end up becoming rough, damaging the flexibility of your clothes. To avoid getting to this point, we have the solution! You just need to use a natural ingredient that we all have at home and that is considered to be a lifesaver in most cases. We are obviously talking about white vinegar !

Ingredients
- 60 centiliters of clean water (demineralized if possible);
- 30 centiliters of white vinegar;
- 5 to 10 drops of essential oil of your choice;
Materials
A glass bottle or a recyclable bottle to store your fabric softener.
Steps to follow
- Pour the water into your reusable bottle or thermos;
- Add the white vinegar;
- Mix until obtaining a perfectly homogeneous solution;
- Add 5 to 10 drops of the essential oil of your choice to scent your fabric softener;
- Shake everything vigorously;
- And there you have it, your fabric softener is ready to use!
For a refreshing scent and an even more pleasant smell, let the fabric softener sit for a whole day before using it. The hypoallergenic white vinegar will preserve your clothes and make them softer and perfectly clean.
It is also a great ally that will help you take care of your washing machine, removing the limescale present in the drum of the machine. Quite the opposite of an industrial fabric softener that contains chemicals that will only clog it in the long term!
Now you know what solution you should use to preserve the softness of your clothes and extend the life of your washing machine!
