The works of the artist from Brescia will be exhibited at the Museum of Santa Giulia and can be visited until January 28, 2024.

Lorenzo Mattotti

A major exhibition that will be held from September 14, 2023 to January 28, 2024, dedicated to the works of the multifaceted Lorenzo Mattotti . Organized by the Municipality in collaboration with the Brescia Musei Foundation and with the curator and art historian Melania Gazzotti .

Mattotti was born in Brescia and, in addition to being an artist, he is also a cartoonist , an illustrator and a director . The exhibition of his works will follow a precise path that will unfold in three areas , those that have influenced him most in his career.

It is the world of music, dance and cinema, which he explores and deepens through his new perspectives . His style has become unique and unmistakable and is the expression of his ability to go beyond the pre-set boundaries .

He therefore breaks the mold to mix different genres and languages with different techniques and styles . The first step of the exhibition concerns the artist’s relationship with music , through two important types of works.

On one hand, the illustrations collected in Lou Reed’s 2011 book The Raven . On the other, the large plates drawn in ink depicting Engelbert Humperdinck ‘s 2009 Hänsel und Gretel at the Paris Opera.

“The Bears’ Famous Invasion of Sicily” Animated Feature Film

In the second step, instead, visitors will be able to see the role that cinema has had in Mattotti’s work . Here they will be able to admire the preparatory drawings together with some of his countless animations .

Also the works related to the interludes of the film Eros . Filmed in three episodes by directors Michelangelo Antonioni, Steven Soderbergh and Wong Kar-wai. Finally, a special space will be dedicated to his animated feature film .

This is the work “The famous invasion of the bears in Sicily” , released in cinemas in 2019. A story from the novel of the same name by Dino Buzzati . The last step will instead concern the artist’s relationship with dance .

Here will be exhibited three large unpublished canvases , which he painted for the Brescia exhibition and which belong to the cycle of works on collective dances. Finally, some drawings that were taken from the book Carneval of 2005 .

These were inspired by Mattotti ‘s experience at the Rio de Janeiro carnival . The exhibition further enriches the artistic and cultural program created by the Brescia Musei Foundation for 2023.
