We can safely store the down jacket in the closet because it is easier to wear in the summer! However, it is best to take it off after thorough cleaning , so that even after it cools down again, it is odorless, stain-free and as good as new.
With that in mind, it’s good to remember that we can do this at home without taking it to the laundromat, which saves money! To achieve and keep it always inflated and soft, evenly padded, you need to know and apply some tips.

Wash the duvet by hand
If your quilt is very valuable and very delicate, it is best to hand wash it .
Pre-treat the most visible stains with pure Marseille soap : just moisten the substance and rub the affected areas . Meanwhile, fill a tub or container with warm water and a neutral detergent, or better yet, a glass of white vinegar and a glass of baking soda. The combination of these two components ensures perfect hygiene. Don’t worry, the pungent smell of vinegar will disappear, but if you want to scent your clothes, add 5 drops of the essence of your choice. Let it soak for at least two hours, stirring occasionally.
After this time, take it out and wrap it in a towel without wringing much to dry the excess water.
Now spread it outside in a place protected from direct sunlight to prevent fading. Lay horizontally and spread the sleeves. To restore it, touch it from time to time: open it, hit it, turn it again and again to move the springs, especially if they are concentrated in one place due to gravity.
However, it is not the only possible procedure!
Let’s see what to do if you want to wash it in the washing machine.
This means that the duvet does not lose air in the washing machine and remains spotless.
Before you put the blanket in the washing machine drum, check the label to make sure it can be washed this way . Then remove the fur parts (hood, collar, cuffs) and hand wash.
As already explained, pre-treat the stains with Marseille soap and then reverse completely. Set the maximum temperature to 30°, too much heat could damage the feathers and filling. Wash it yourself, but to prevent it from deflating, put two tennis balls in it. When rolling, they massage the garment and prevent pilling. Stop the spin cycle, which would destroy all your ambitions to keep the garment soft, and start the cycle .
When you’re done, you can hang it outside as explained above, or if you have a dryer, use it . However, keep in mind that you should proceed with caution. Also in this case, it is advisable to set a low temperature. The blanket should be turned inside out to speed up drying of the interior and protect the exterior. Add a few balls of wool to ensure optimal distribution of the padding and prevent it from caking in the same place . Every 20 minutes or so, stop the machine and shake the jacket vigorously to fluff it up . Once the cycle is over, hang it on a hanger and leave it outside for half a day.
Store it in the closet until the cold weather returns, but for now, enjoy your summer!
