The experience of growing tomatoes according to the famous Maslov method dates back more than 40 years. This method is often confused with the technology of transplanting overgrown seedlings, but they differ from each other.
Igor Mikhailovich Maslov became known in the 80s, when one of the magazines published an article about his experiment in the place where he achieved incredible results. From each bush of the varieties “De Barao” and “Teplichny” he was able to harvest 70 kg of tomatoes, while maintaining all the useful qualities of tomatoes.
To achieve these indicators, Maslov used methods based on the ability of tomatoes to form so-called aerial roots and, when the stem comes into contact with the soil, additional roots. Now many will say that this is already known, because deepening and porching the tomatoes is a common practice. However, there are certain nuances in this method that are innovations.

An engineer from Kaliningrad observed the growth of seedlings and noticed that when the shrub was planted in the open ground in a horizontal position instead of vertical, the tomatoes developed a rather powerful root system.

Small compaction on the underside of the stems represents an underdeveloped root system. When favorable conditions are created, including a sufficient amount of water and direct contact with the soil, the roots become active, fully develop and provide the tomatoes with additional nutrition, stimulating the rapid formation and ripening of the fruits.
The fundamental principles of the method are the right landing. Seedlings should be healthy, strong, and larger than the normal seedlings that gardeners use. The thickness of the stem affects future roots. A strong and thick stem guarantees good roots. It is best to use tall-growing varieties.

To plant tomatoes using this method, dig a trench to a depth of 10 cm. Then place the tomato bush, removing all but the top leaves. And here’s the most important point: the top of the stem should be facing north and the roots facing south! The top of the head will always be exposed to the sun and will soon straighten out.

This method has its advantages and disadvantages. Among the benefits are the use of the natural potential of the tomato and the development of complementary roots, which provides greater nutrition and water to the plants. Practice shows that the yield of tall tomatoes increases 10 times and that of low-growing tomatoes 3 times. In addition, fewer seedlings are required to produce a large number of fruits.
However, the method also has some disadvantages. Tomatoes grown using this method take up more space. Due to the large number of fruits on the bush, the size of tomatoes may be smaller and, consequently, their flesh and juice. The first tomatoes that form close to the ground can have an unmarketable appearance and are sometimes susceptible to rot. In addition, a special approach is required to water and feed the plants.
It should be remembered that Maslov’s method requires careful implementation of all stages and strict adherence to the recommendations. If everything is done correctly, you can enjoy a bountiful and high-quality tomato harvest.
