I want to warn you that not all popular fertilisers are suitable for potatoes and can harm their growth. To avoid mistakes, I will tell you several types of fertilizers that should not be used.

Organic and manure
Organic fertilizers and manure are very useful and natural substances, but they should not be used when planting tubers in holes. With this method of adding fertilizers, they become useless, as the need for organic matter and nitrogen from the potato appears precisely during the flowering period. When planting, manure simply doesn’t have time to break down and provide nutrients.

It would be more correct to add manure and humus in autumn or spring, when digging up the soil. Thus, the crop will receive the maximum amount of nutrients necessary for active growth.

Ash
Ash is one of the most popular fertilizers among gardeners, but it is not suitable for potatoes. This type of crop does not like alkaline soils and the ash creates them. In order not to damage the plantings, it is best to add ash to the garden bed in the fall.

You can also mix ash with sponge cake, as it is an ideal combination of components that will greatly benefit the potatoes.
