Cucumbers can be grown outdoors or in greenhouses, but regardless of the choice, they need a basic nutrient, such as chalk. In fact, this substance makes the soil even more suitable for growing vegetables, neutralizing acidity and improving soil structure. Gypsum contains substances that are useful for the nutrition of vegetables and, therefore, of cucumbers, such as calcium, a substance that cucumbers need in large quantities to grow and develop. Therefore, the high calcium content of gypsum is essential to improve the quantity and quality of the harvest. Especially during fruiting, when the calcium needed for abundant growth is lacking, rotting problems can occur and the harvest could shrink and become poor. Gypsum is already naturally present in the soil, but sometimes it is not enough to provide cucumbers with all the calcium they need for their magnificent growth. To compensate for this deficiency, it is possible to water cucumbers and other vegetables using a DIY-made chalk fertilizer, following a simple procedure. Here’s how to do it.
How to prepare gypsum fertilizer
To make chalk fertilizer you need a few ingredients, here are a few:
- 200 grams of chalk;
- 10 litros de agua tibia.
Gypsum must be ground before use, a process necessary to completely dissolve the substance in water and distribute it evenly in the soil. In addition to calcium, dissolved gypsum also provides plants with very important substances such as silicon and magnesium, which are essential for healthy growth. To shred the chalk, place it in a plastic zippered bag and place it on a cutting board. Press the cast firmly several times with a mallet or meat tenderizer until it is crushed to a powder. Once you have the chalk powder, pour it into the warm water you put in a container. You can do this by reducing the doses, keeping in mind that you will need 50 grams of chalk for 2.5 liters of warm water.
How to Use Cucumber Fertilizer
Once you’ve added the chalk powder to the warm water, mix the solution gently and let it sit for 10 minutes. Once the time has elapsed, stir again and let it rest for another ten minutes. At this time, add the liquid obtained to the watering can and water the cucumber plants so that the product enters the soil near the plant as much as possible. Water the cucumbers once a month with this solution, preferably in the evenings, and you will see that the harvest will be more abundant, even doubling in size after just one week. The nutrients contained in chalk immediately show its effectiveness and allow you to grow many other vegetables in the best possible way, always bringing bountiful harvests and healthy products to the table.
