Natural insect repellent

During the summer, it is quite common to find insects in your home, especially if there are windows or doors that remain open for a long time. Insects are primarily attracted to light and food, so it would be a good idea to equip yourself with mosquito nets if you intend to leave your windows open and lights on. In addition, it is essential to keep the house clean, eliminating food scraps and throwing away garbage frequently, so as not to attract unwanted guests.

Finally, if you have plants, keep an eye out for saucers or vases, if they are aquatic plants, as they are perfect places for mosquitoes to nest. Most people resort to chemical repellent sprays, which can often be harmful to humans but also to the environment. In fact, in most of them it is recommended to let the rooms air out after use. In this article we will see how to make a completely natural, inexpensive and also scented insect repellent.

How to Make a Homemade Repellent

The first thing to identify are the raw materials that bother our little unwanted guests. One of the least tolerated ingredients is undoubtedly tobacco. Tobacco can be used as a natural pesticide to keep insects away from plants and our homes. The nicotine present in tobacco, in fact, is a natural insecticide that can kill or repel insects. All you need to do is get some distilled water, tobacco, and an essential oil of your choice, as long as it’s of natural origin. First, heat the water and pour it into a container. Then add the tobacco and a few drops of essential oil and mix well to dissolve the ingredients. Then cover the mixture and let it rest for about 8 hours.

After this time, take a new container, a strainer and proceed to filter your mixture. You will notice that the water will have absorbed the tobacco and will take on an amber color. Once everything is filtered, continue pouring the solution into a spray bottle. Now that you have your natural repellent, you can spray it first on the plants, where insects nest and often lay their eggs. It can also be used directly on mosquito nets, as mosquitoes attracted to light are known to stay near windows. Last but not least, you can use the decoction in bathroom and kitchen drains, where mosquitoes often nest. in this case leave it on for a few minutes and rinse with water.
