Making your own detergent at home allows you to spend only ten euros per year on a washing machine.

Do-it-yourself laundry detergent: benefits

Detergent, in addition to being purchased in a supermarket, can be made at home with significant economic savings. Making your own detergent will also allow you  to respect the environment and the health  of the people we care about. Detergents sold in supermarkets very often contain surfactants or chemicals that can have harmful effects on the body in the long term.

Without forgetting the dangerous effects on the environment. In addition, the household detergent is hypoallergenic and contains no preservatives.

It turned out that, for example, French families  do an average of 5 washes per week in the washing machine  , a total of 220 washes per year. During these washes, 26 liters of liquid detergent and 40 kilos of powder detergent are consumed.

You can make all kinds of detergents at home, even those for washing your own clothes in the washing machine.  Let’s see how to make it  for a year’s worth of laundry, using just two ingredients and for less than ten euros (about 0.35 cents per liter).

Manufacturing process

The ingredients needed to prepare the liquid detergent you will need for a year of washing are as follows:

  • Marseille soap  flakes, 60 grams (average price, around 0.40 cents)
  • sodium percarbonate  , 15 grams (average price 0.15 cents)
  • bicarbonate  , 30 grams, (average price 0.10 cents)
  • essential oil  , a few drops (about 0.05 cents).
  • 1 liter of hot water
  • 1 liter of cold water

First you need to heat a liter of water. Flakes of Marseille soap must be incorporated inside. The chips must be mixed well.

With the flame off, pour in the bicarbonate of soda and then the bicarbonate. Then you can mix everything with a blender. The aim is to make the mixture as homogeneous as possible.

After that, the mixture should be cooled and left to sit for about a whole day. At this point the detergent should be very compact, but this is a normal phase. The next stage is to mix everything  by adding a liter of cold water  . This time too, the goal is for the mixture to be homogeneous and smooth.

You will need some mason jars, those from classic liquid detergents pre-rinsed and dried are fine, but also simple plastic bottles. You can choose a glass container if you want. A few drops of the essential oil of your choice should be added to the detergent. It will be used to scent the laundry. Lavender and lemon are examples of this.

For a low price, you get  a liquid detergent capable of bleaching, disinfecting and removing stains from your laundry.  These properties are given to it by bicarbonate, which is a natural and biodegradable product. In addition, it can also act as an emollient and anti-odorant.

Sodium percarbonate, on the other hand, disinfects and removes stains. Marseille soap, on the other hand, is a biodegradable and anti-allergic product that cleans gently.
