Natural fertilizer for plants: how to use it

This natural fertilizer is a sustainable and ecological option, as it does not contain chemicals harmful to the environment.  What is it? It is yeast.

The yeast contained in sourdough is used to make the dough rise, but yeast can also be used for plants. Yeast alone does not provide food directly to the plants, but acts as a root stimulant. There are several ways to use yeast as a fertilizer. Here are some options:

  • The  first option  is to mix a teaspoon of baking powder with half a litre of warm water. Let the mixture sit for at least an hour so that the yeast activates and begins to produce carbon dioxide. The solution can then be sprayed onto the leaves of the plants or poured directly onto the base of the roots. This process helps the plant to absorb carbon dioxide, favouring the process of photosynthesis and therefore healthy and vigorous growth.

  • Another  method  is to add a mixture of yeast and water to the compost at the time of its creation. The yeast helps to break down the organic matter and nutrients in the compost. This process helps to produce more nutrient-rich humus, which plants can easily absorb for healthy growth;
  • The  third method is to use yeast to create liquid fertilizer. To do this, you need to add two cups of yeast powder to 5 liters of water, along with some “activating” ingredients such as honey, brown sugar, and lactic acid. Let the mixture ferment for a few days, until it darkens and smells less acidic. The liquid fertilizer can be sprayed directly onto the roots or leaves of the plants, as described above.

In general, it is recommended  to use vegetable yeast  once or twice a month for best results.

Benefits of yeast for plants

Yeast  has been used  for years as an effective aid in gardening and plant cultivation. Its benefits are many and include increased disease resistance, improved soil nutrition, reduced plant development time, and more robust and vigorous growth.

Firstly, it helps improve soil quality because it contains a number of nutrients essential for plant growth, such as sulphur, magnesium, calcium and iron. This way, plants  have access to all the nutrients  they need to grow healthy and strong.

In addition, yeast helps stimulate the growth of plant roots, increasing their ability to absorb water and  nutrients from the soil.  This means that plants will be able to grow better and better withstand adverse conditions, such as drought or disease.
