Grass snake in the garden

It may happen to find snakes in the garden but there are some solutions you can try to keep them away. For example, choose these plants that are cheap and very colorful. Although in Italy most of the snakes you encounter are harmless and non-venomous, it is not pleasant to have them in the garden just a few steps from your home.

Infact, the grass snake is not poisonous and is harmless to humans. It normally has a color tending to gray with black parts. The belly, on the other hand, is a lighter color. They usually hide among piles of wood or under leaves and stones. In short, where they find a possible hiding place.

However, the solution may be easier than expected as there are plants you can put in your garden to solve this problem. So without having to call a professional exterminator you will have solved it and you will no longer find these reptiles in your home garden.

Grass snakes in the garden: solve with these plants

As we were saying, you can find snakes in your garden. Although they are harmless, they are unwanted guests and for this reason it is preferred to keep them away from home. What is certain is that they are beneficial for the environment but their presence creates fear especially if there is a front door and windows near the garden.

To keep them away naturally, you can solve it by simply planting plants that repel these reptiles with their smell. One of the best known plants to solve this problem is Allium. This includes garlic, onion and shallots and therefore the smell is strong enough to make any snake move away.

It will then be enough to plant it in your garden to keep them away. It creates a sort of natural barrier just by the smell of it. However, this plant is not the only one and there are others as well. Among others we have lavender which is very fragrant for us while for reptiles it has a very pungent smell.

Then there is also calendula, a colorful and very attractive plant, which however is not pleasant for snakes because of the smell. In fact, it has a very intense smell that keeps reptiles at a distance. Then there are the fragrant geraniums. These are mostly decorative plants and have a strong citrus smell that is not very welcome and somewhat annoying for reptiles.

Other plants that drive away grass snakes

Then there are still other plants that have this function and in general it is always the smell emanating that keeps them away. Here are some more you can put in your garden:

  • Peppermint: this is a very effective aromatic plant to keep snakes away. It creates a sort of natural barrier that deters snakes.
  • Rosemary: this is an evergreen shrub and placed in some strategic places helps to keep them away with its smell. It can also be used in the kitchen.
  • Sage: This is an aromatic plant whose strong smell keeps snakes away. You can also use it in the kitchen.
Thyme
  • Thyme: this is an aromatic plant to be planted in order to be able to use it in the kitchen as well. It has repellent properties for snakes.
  • Euphorbia: this is a plant known for its repellent properties against reptiles and in particular against grass snakes. The main reason is that this produces a milky sap that irritates the skin of the snakes. This is why they are discouraged from approaching.
Snake in your own garden

You have to consider that plants can be a natural way to ward off grass snakes but they are not a foolproof solution. In fact, grass snakes are animals that adapt easily so it is not certain that these plants can drive them away forever. If they are not useful and do not work, it is better to always clean the garden well to prevent them from making nests and then call an expert.
