Follow this trick for tomato plants and you will see that you will have a harvest of up to 30% more. You wouldn’t expect it but it’s super simple.
Around May/June we start with the sowing of tomatoes. There are numerous varieties to choose from. There are round vine tomatoes or datterini tomatoes. Or even Cuori di bue tomatoes, San Marzano tomato, Costoluti tomatoes, Piennolo tomato and many other types. Not all of them can be applied the trick we are about to indicate.
In fact, this trick is intended for tomato plants that develop vertically near the canes that you will place in the ground. There is a very specific reason and it concerns the female. The latter is nothing more than that sprout that is usually removed by going to do a job of topping and trimming to give birth to other tomatoes.
The trick we’re about to show you goes to grow the crop 30% more and can be applied to indeterminate growing plants. This means nothing more than that the plant will develop and bear fruit until the first cold weather arrives. Below, in the next paragraph, we see the details of this trick that you can do in your vegetable garden.
Tomatoes: Use this trick to increase the yield
This trick to make plants grow faster is not to put any fertilizer in the plants. The plant itself and its branches are exploited. In particular, we are going to touch on femminella, or the part of the plant that we have already mentioned previously.
As we have said, this trick can only be used on tall and indeterminate growing tomato plants (remember it). In practice, instead of removing the shoots and therefore reducing the yield, we make sure that they grow and turn into a new stem complete with leaves, flowers and fruits.
These axillary shoots then if they are not cut they turn into a new stem. As a result, the yield will be higher, but since there is a new stem, the plant will require more nutrients. The plant, even if it will have more fruits, will not grow much but will remain smaller. In any case, it is not recommended to remain all the females on the plant.
Only some can remain but the others will still have to be removed. A plant invaded by leaves will have a better yield because there will also be less air circulation. In addition, the plant becomes unstable with too many females. So don’t overdo it in keeping these shoots, in short, we can say keep them just right so as not to damage the plant.
Fertilizers for tomato plants
In case you also want to use fertilizer for your tomato plants, we recommend some natural ones that you can prepare and use. Here they are:
- Manure: it is the best organic fertilizer that can be used in the cultivation of this plant. However, it must come from non-industrial farms.
- Ash: Wood ash contains many minerals that are useful to the plant.
- Liquid solution: pour a glass of cold, unsweetened coffee into a bottle of warm water. You can use this solution simply as this or enrich it with vegetable cooking water.
These are some examples, but the best fertilizers for tomatoes are those rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
