Before you begin the multiplication process to grow a cherry tree, it is important to prepare the soil and ensure that it is suitable for new plants to grow. The cherry tree prefers well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Make sure the soil is well fertilized and tilled so that it provides new plants with all the nutrients they need for healthy growth.
The multiplication of cherry trees can take place through different techniques, such as transplanting cuttings or using grafts. In this article, we will focus on the dormant bud grafting technique, which is one of the most common.
To get started, you’ll need to gather the necessary materials. You’ll need a healthy sprig of cherry tree, a cherry rootstock plant, and a sharp, clean knife. Make sure that the material of both plants is free of disease or pests.
Once you have your materials ready, follow these steps:
- Choose a healthy, young sprig with well-developed buds to use as a grafting material. Make sure the twig is not too young or too old, ideally it should be about 6-8 millimeters thick and about 10-15 centimeters long;
- Take the cherry tree rootstock plant and make a “T” cut on the bark, slightly above the ground, using the sharp knife. Make sure the cut is clean and precise;
- Take the selected sprig and cut it so that you get a dormant bud with a small portion of wood from the previous year. Make sure the gemstone is well developed and free of damage or signs of disease:
