Often, water and detergent are not enough to clean and disinfect wooden ladles , utensils that easily fill with bacteria and therefore must be sanitized to perfection before using them again. What to do in these cases? There are simple methods to put into practice using ingredients that we already have at home, therefore easy to find and also very cheap. Let’s find out what to do to disinfect wooden ladles!
How to clean wooden ladles
Wooden ladles are among the most used utensils in the kitchen and must be treated properly to sanitize them perfectly and reuse them every day without health risks . Unfortunately, given the material, we cannot put them in the dishwasher, since the appliance reaches very high temperatures and the material can easily be damaged.
In addition, heat and humidity promote the proliferation of bacteria in the material, so you need to be careful to wash them carefully before reusing them. It is also best to avoid chemical dish detergents because they are usually aggressive and can ruin the wood of the utensils.
This type of utensils tends to absorb, so dirt, grease and food residues concentrate on them, which is why hot water and dish soap are often not enough to remove bacteria and sanitize them. Don’t worry, here’s a solution to have perfectly disinfected wooden ladles !

Sanitizing mixture for wooden ladles
To have wooden ladles perfectly free from dirt and properly sanitized, you can opt for a mixture specially prepared to achieve this purpose. With this mixture you can thoroughly clean these utensils and free them from bacteria, thus avoiding health risks.
The first thing you need to do is choose a large container to prepare the mixture and where you can then soak the wooden ladles. Once you have found the container, here is how to prepare the mixture and what to do to clean the ladles:
- Pour 1.5 litres of water into a saucepan;
- Add 1 1/2 cups of vinegar to the water;
- Place the pot on the stove and boil for about 10 minutes;
- Remove the pan from the heat and pour the solution into the container;
- Immerse the wooden spoons in the solution and let them soak until the liquid becomes cold.
When the solution has cooled it is time to remove them and rinse them with running water. After rinsing them with plenty of water, place the ladles in the open air so that they dry quickly.

Also add lemon juice to the mix
You can also add lemon juice to the mixture , which will release a pleasant scent and calm the strong smell of vinegar. The degreasing and sanitizing action of lemon makes it one of the most effective ingredients in cleaning these utensils, as it helps eliminate strong odors and grease easily.
Then add the lemon juice to the solution prepared as indicated above to make your ladles even cleaner and more sanitized and also pleasantly scented. Instead of putting them in the open air, if you don’t have how to do it, you can dry the ladles with a soft and dry cloth , able to treat the wood delicately so as not to ruin it.
The mixture described above can be used whenever it is necessary to clean them, as they are natural ingredients, which do not cause damage to the material or to our health. The results we will obtain are certainly great and we will no longer have utensils full of bacteria and dirt, but very clean and disinfected, to cook food without health risks!
