Do you prefer to eat your bananas when they are not too ripe? Have you bought a bunch of bananas? Here is a tip that could be very useful to prevent your bananas from ripening too quickly and turning black.
Bananas are a fruit that is very popular with the French. Combining pleasure and health, this fruit is very nutritious and can be easily carried anywhere in a bag. But for many, it is a real headache to store them because they tend to ripen very quickly and can turn black very quickly, especially when it is hot. It is therefore quite normal to look for simple tips to keep them longer.
Our first tip is not to put them next to other fruits. Some fruits like apples, kiwi, pears, peaches, tomatoes or avocados release ethylene gas which accelerates the ripening of fruits and vegetables. The best way to store them when you come back from shopping is to remove them from their plastic bag and hang them on a hook on the wall or ceiling. This tip improves air circulation around the fruits, thus reducing the action of ethylene gas.
Before hanging them, remember to wrap the banana stems in plastic wrap. This will prevent air from entering the fruit and therefore ripening them too quickly. This will keep the fruit fresher for longer.
If you don’t want to hang your bananas, here’s a final handy tip. Place a cork in your fruit basket. It will absorb moisture and therefore prevent the fruit from ripening too quickly. Another advantage: its smell will scare away midges.
The mistake not to make: putting your bananas in the refrigerator when they are not yet ripe. This will completely stop the ripening. The skin may turn black, but the banana will remain green inside. Result: an inedible banana!
