Do you have pipe smells in your kitchen or bathroom? A simple ingredient in our refrigerators can make them disappear in the blink of an eye! But what is it? And how to use it?

When smells from pipes settle in the kitchen or bathroom, it is really unpleasant. While cleaning the trap regularly solves part of the problem, very often the smells return and need to be treated. Instead of using gels that are harmful to health and the environment, we scoured the web to find the best natural advice against these bad smells. One of them particularly caught our attention, because beyond its effectiveness, we all have this ingredient in our fridge and it is very simple to make. This is   the yogurt technique  .

Do you know the one? Take some plain yogurt out of your fridge and leave it on your counter for five days, at room temperature, to ferment. Pour it into the smelly pipe. You can run a light stream of water so that the yogurt flows towards the problematic clog. Let the lactic acid bacteria do its work for 48 hours ideally. They will remove the smelly gunk. Then rinse with warm water.

We have also discovered other tips (tested and approved) to prevent these bad smells from returning:

  • Make ice cubes out of white vinegar and melt one in the drain at night, once a week.
  • Put a spoonful of oil in the pipes before you go on holiday. This will prevent the water from evaporating, and therefore, bad smells when you return from holiday.
