The trick to sharpening a knife at home and keeping it sharper for longer

Sharpening razor blades may seem like a domain reserved for professionals, but did you know that there are simple tips you can use at home to extend the life of your disposable razors? In this article, we’ll explore three effective methods for sharpening razor blades using common items you have on hand. You’ll be amazed at how simple these techniques are, which will save you money and reduce your carbon footprint by not throwing away razors that are still usable.

  1. Sharpening a razor blade with a needle

Disposable razors tend to dull quickly  , but with a simple needle you can restore them to their original state.

How to proceed?

  1. Hold the knife firmly and place a large needle against the blades.
  2. Then rub the needle over the leaves, applying moderate pressure, for about a minute.
  3. If the blade is very dull, prolong this process.
  4. Alternatively, place the needle on a flat surface, hold it with your fingers and slide the razor blades along the needle.

The irregularities on the blades will gradually fade away. After these steps, your razors, even the most worn ones, will regain their effectiveness almost like new.

  1. Sharpening a razor blade with jeans

To   sharpen   razor blades   with jeans  , you will need a small diameter, stiff cardboard tube (like the one from a roll of aluminum foil or plastic wrap) and a piece of jeans.

How to proceed?

  1. Take a  small diameter cardboard tube   and wrap a piece of denim around it. Make sure the outer side of the jeans (the rougher side) is facing the inside of the tube.
  2. Hold the jeans-covered tube firmly. Using the razor blade, make a sliding motion along the length of the pants, from the handle to the tip of the blade. This motion should be made in the opposite direction to the edge of the blades so as not to dull them.
  3. Tilt the knife slightly as you stroke to evenly sharpen all blades.
  4. Repeat this movement several times. The number of repetitions will depend on the wear and tear of the paddles; the more forceful they are, the more time they will require.
  1. Create your own knife sharpener

If you are willing to invest a little more effort to achieve long-lasting results, you can   make your own knife sharpener using matchboxes  .

How to proceed?

  1. Start by cutting thin strips from three matchboxes. Make sure to remove the excess paper so that you are left with just the cardboard strips.
  2. Take a piece of cardboard that is a little wider than your razor and about 10 cm long. Glue the cardboard strips cut from the matchboxes to this piece of cardboard, placing them side by side along their length. These strips will act as a surface for sharpening the razor blades.
  3. Reinforce everything by pressing another piece of cardboard onto the glued strips, thus ensuring good adhesion.
  4. Allow the glue to dry completely before using your sharpening device.
  5. Then simply slide the knife over the sharpener 30 to 50 times.
  6. If the knife is very old, it will take a little longer to sharpen it.

This method requires a little more effort, but will allow you to sharpen your razor blades efficiently and economically.
