It’s true, lizards are fascinating animals. But between us, we’d rather see them in a documentary on TV than waddling along the garden walls. Although they are harmless and get rid of small, harmful insects, it’s never nice to see them unexpectedly appear on the terrace or balcony. Ok, but how do you keep them away from your house without harming them? Ditch the chemical methods and start using natural tips. You’ll get them away in record time!
What attracts lizards to your home?

Although these reptiles like the heat to thrive, they especially need water to live. Certainly, cooling down the house will not encourage them to settle there, but the slightest puddle can attract them. So repair any leaks and dry any damp areas so that they have no reason to come in through the windows. You should also know that lizards love light: just prepare a snack on the terrace so that one always comes to visit you. Finally, if they so often wander around the garden or even try to sneak into the house, it is mainly because lizards are very attracted to flies or ants. By carefully dealing with your insect problem , you will already eliminate one of their food sources. Therefore, make sure to empty the trash more often and keep the interior clean. Even in the garden, try to prevent the invasion of ants as much as possible, otherwise the lizards will stay around.
How to get rid of lizards?
1. She

If you are hostile to chemical solutions, there are natural methods that are just as practical. Take garlic for example. Did you know that this condiment is a perfect repellent to scare away these small reptiles? If you were looking for an interesting way to get rid of these lizards and even unwanted insects, garlic is a great ally.
How to do it?
Just place a few cloves on your terrace or balcony, in dark and shady corners (or even in cracks in the walls) and the strong smell of garlic will drive away all these pests.
Another solution
- Otherwise, you can use it another way: grind it and mix it with water.
- Then, pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray it in the areas where lizards most frequently appear.
- Pay special attention to outdoor spaces, such as balconies and terraces, not forgetting dark areas near windows, which are the favorite places for these reptiles.
2. Eggshells and shallots

Apart from garlic, another natural method will also surprise you and above all relieve you! It involves using eggshells to repel lizards. If you place them in the same places where they usually appear, you will be pleasantly surprised to notice their disappearance. But in fact, how can we explain that these shells are so repellent? Simply because they contain sulfur which causes a burning sensation in the lizard’s abdomen. Quite strange, isn’t it? And what is even more surprising, the smell of sulfur itself is reminiscent of the beak of a bird, the lizard’s natural predator. So this is a great deal for you! You will only have to use the quantity you want and replace these eggshells approximately every three weeks.
Please note that if you have one at home, it also works with quail eggs.
You can also rely on the potential of shallots, another ecological repellent against lizards. Same principle, they cannot stand the sulphur or the smell it gives off. How to proceed? Chop or crush a few shallots before placing them in strategic areas. And that’s it!
3. Pepper
Do you like spicy food? Well, lizards hate anything spicy! The spicy smell will make them run away in no time. Take advantage of this opportunity to spray a solution of water mixed with cayenne pepper or Tabasco sauce. And voila, quickly done right, you will deter all lizards from approaching your home.
Tip : Fill holes and cracks with caulk or large mesh to seal enlarged holes. And, while you’re at it, consider installing weather stripping on door and window frames as well. Also consider using screened fences and sliding doors to prevent lizards (but also a wide variety of insects!) from invading the premises.
4. The bottle lizard trap.
5. The leaf lizard trap.
Before you consider making a trap with your own hands, try to figure out what lizard you’re dealing with. By identifying its species, you’ll be better equipped to catch it! So, to do this, you should try to get close enough to take a photo of it from various angles. Next, you should get to know the types of lizards that live in your area. From there, you’re sure to have a fight and be able to better fight off those that have taken up residence in your home. For example, small species are much easier to catch with the right bait (obviously, also from a human point of view). Plus, it’s not uncommon to even be able to gently grab them with your hands to dislodge them from somewhere else.
Materials
- Gloves
- A sheet of paper
- Double-sided tape
- As bait, these reptiles greatly appreciate insects, vegetables and fruits.
How to do it?
- Place your application in the middle of the sheet.
- Then around your application, stick the double sided tape so that it goes around your application.
- For added efficiency, you can put rat and mouse glue on your sticky tape.
- The trap is set, all you have to do is wait.
Caution
This trap should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
