How to grow a cherry tree? Techniques from industry professionals.

Before beginning   the process of propagation   of the cherry tree, it is important to prepare the soil and ensure that it is suitable for the growth of new plants. Cherry prefers well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Make sure the soil is well fertilized and tilled to give the new plants all the nutrients they need for healthy growth.

Propagation   of cherry plants   can be produced using various techniques such as transplanting cuttings or using grafts. In this article, we will focus on the technique of grafting dormant buds, which is one of the most widespread.

To get started, you’ll need to gather   the necessary materials   . You will need a healthy cherry branch, a cherry rootstock and a clean, sharp knife. Make sure both plant materials are disease or pest free.

Once   you have your materials ready   , proceed as follows:

  • Choose   a young, healthy branch with well-developed buds to use as grafting material. Make sure the twig is neither too young nor too old, ideally about 6-8 millimeters thick and about 10-15 centimeters long;
  • Take the rootstock  of the cherry tree   and use a sharp knife to make a cut in the bark slightly above the ground. Make sure the cut is clean and precise;
  • Take the selected twig and cut it to obtain   a dormant bud   with a small portion of the previous year’s wood. Make sure the bud is well developed and free of damage or signs of disease:
  • Carefully insert the bud   under the bark of the rootstock, making sure it is positioned correctly so that it adheres well to the wood. Make sure the yolk is completely covered by the crust;
  • Wrap   the grafting point with grafting tape   to protect and keep it secure. Make sure the ribbon is wrapped tightly, but not so tightly that it compresses the gem;
  • After the graft is completed, protect the graft area from any damage or disturbance. You can do this by placing a plastic cone or cut plastic bottle over the graft;
  • Water grafted plants regularly to keep them hydrated and encourage root formation.

How long does it take for a plant to develop?

After about 3-4 weeks,   you should start to see signs of growth on the grafted plant, such as the formation of new buds or leaves. This indicates that the grafting was successful and the plant is growing well.
