Mold deposited inside the washing machine can be a really annoying problem, especially when it is in places that are difficult to clean. But all is not lost: there are methods to remove it effectively. Also, you can take simple steps to solve the problem at the root and prevent mold from returning. Let’s find out how to do it.

Why does mold form?

Molds grow in humid, poorly ventilated environments with little natural light. Therefore, it goes without saying that appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, and washing machines, which use water or steam, are among the first prone to this problem. As for the washing machine in particular, mold tends to form in places like the sealsdrumfilter, and laundry container.

It is very important to properly remove mold and prevent it from forming. In addition to causing unpleasant odors and damaging clothes, mold is made up of fungi that are dangerous to health.

Remove the mold with lemon and white vinegar

The detergent compartment is one of the most prone places for mold growth. For what? There are many reasons for this: water, moisture, fabric softeners, and detergent residue are all contributing factors to mold formation. Thanks to white vinegar and lemon, which have degreasing and disinfecting properties respectively, it is possible to solve this problem and remove mold from the clothes drawer. How to do it?

Simply make a mixture by combining a quarter cup of stuffed lemon juice with 1/2 cup of diluted white vinegar, finally add 2 cups of water. At this point, simply spray the mixture obtained into the detergent compartment and leave it to act. To do this, it is advisable to use a spray bottle, which will facilitate the application of the solution. In addition, it is preferable to equip yourself with gloves and a dust mask to properly protect yourself from mold.

Once the vinegar and lemon have taken effect, you can use a cloth to thoroughly clean the laundry tray, removing stains. Therefore, the corners could be more complicated to clean, but to make the operation easier, simply use a toothbrush.

Finally, as an alternative to vinegar and lemon, you can prepare the same solution using water and hydrogen peroxide.

Remove the mold from the basket and seal

The mixture of white vinegar and lemon can also be used to remove mold from the washer’s joints and drum. As for the basket, to clean it you will have to pour the prepared solution inside and start a vacuum wash at 90°.

How to Prevent Mold Growth

Once you understand how to remove mold from the washing machine drum, it is important to solve the problem at the root. In fact, it is possible to prevent mold from forming. Here are some tips:

  • Use smaller amounts of detergent. In general, it’s always a good idea to follow the instructions given by the washing machine manufacturer to know the correct doses of detergent. In this way, residues inside the detergent compartment will be avoided, which, when stagnant, lead to the formation of mould ;
  • Choose a solid detergent. The use of soap to wash clothes in solid form prevents the formation of mold since, by placing it in the drum with the clothes, residues in the laundry compartment will be avoided;
  • Perform regular maintenance on your washing machine. For example, it is important to periodically check that the clothes drawer closes completely and that there are no water leaks inside. If this doesn’t happen, it could create the perfect environment for mold to grow. To check that the drawer closes properly, you will need to remove it after turning off the washing machine.
