This is the bottle trick, which attracts mosquitoes inside and prevents them from doing harm. Now you might be wondering what it is. Well, first of all you need to get a 1.5 liter plastic bottle or even better if you find a 2 liter one. The rest of what you need is hot water, sugar and brewer’s yeast (you choose whether in a stick or bag), black cardstock and adhesive tape.
How to proceed to create the mosquito bottle
The first thing you should do is cut the plastic bottle at a distance of about 5-10 cm from the point where it starts to shrink. Keep both pieces. Meanwhile, heat the water together with the sugar and let everything boil for about ten minutes. Then let it cool. At this point you can pour the mixture into the bottom of the cut bottle. Now also add the brewer’s yeast: you can decide whether to use the whole stick (in this case it is best to dissolve it first in a little warm water), just one gram or the powdered version, adding the whole sachet. Try it out and choose the one that suits you best. At this point, take the top of the bottle (removing the cap) and place it inside the other bottle upside down. Secure the two parts with tape to prevent the chemical reaction between the ingredients from escaping. Finally cover the edges with dark cardstock. Place it in the place you want and you will see that the fusion of water with sugar and brewer’s yeast will trigger a chemical reaction that generates a lot of carbon dioxide, which mosquitoes like so much. This will form at the bottom of the bottle and when mosquitoes try to reach it they will get trapped. This mixture is valid for two weeks and then needs to be replaced.
