A florist's trick for healthy tulips

Among all spring flowers, tulips are certainly highly valued not only for their colors, but above all for their characteristic shape. Nevertheless, they are flowers that  require special care in water and on land  to keep them fresh and in good condition. So let’s see what is the trick of florists to make them beautiful.

Tulips, things you should know

Tulips are  typically spring flowers that bloom with the first warm weather  . Bulbous plants need at least 4 weeks before the bulbs grow into a flower. Despite their seasonality, they are flowers that do not like direct sun or heat, they prefer cool places.

Few people know that  once tulips have faded, their bulbs can be dug up, dried and stored in a cool, dry place and then planted the following year  . Tulips bloom much longer than many other spring flowers and care is different if they are cut flowers and put in a vase of water or if they are planted flowers.

In the first case, it is a good idea to cut off a centimeter of the stem diagonally when placing it in pots and eliminate the leaves, which would quickly rot when in contact with water. But there is  a trick that few people know to make them last even longer,  and florists know it well.

In addition to the best care and attention to the oblique cut of the base of the flower,  there are other measures that can be taken to make our tulips last longer in pots  .

It is always a good idea to fill the vase with cold water first   , as hot water could encourage the possible growth of bacteria. And speaking of bacteria, with cut flowers it’s a good practice to add a few drops of lemon juice to the water in the vase. This will help slow the deterioration of the quality of the flowers.
What about tulips in the ground?

Sufficient hydration must be ensured for planted flowers  . The main cause of deterioration of tulips in the country is actually dehydration followed by too much light. It is important to keep the soil always moist with regular watering once a week. Excessive watering can cause the plant to rot, so always pay attention to the soil conditions.

It is also very important  to know when to cut the flowers in order for the plant to thrive.  To make it last as long as possible, the flowers should be cut when they are not yet fully colored, but around 75%.

This way they can be placed in a vase of water and continue to grow and the plant will continue to live without spending too much energy on flowering. The time when the flowers are cut is also very important. It is advisable to do it  early in the morning or late in the evening  , with the lowest temperatures, so as not to stress the plant too much.
