Mixture of clove and naphthalene:

The combination of cloves and mothballs may seem unusual at first glance, but this mixture is an effective secret to keep your home free of insects while scenting your interior in a natural and inexpensive way. Let’s find out how this recipe works, what are its benefits and how you can prepare it at home.

The Power of Carnations and Mothballs

Cloves are known for their antiseptic and bactericidal properties, as well as their strong aroma that disorients, intoxicates and repels insects. Naphthalene is mainly composed of naphthalene and, thanks to its intense smell, is an effective natural repellent against cockroaches, moths and other insects. When combined, these two ingredients create an effective solution for eliminating household pests.

Recipe: Homemade insecticide with cloves and mothballs

Ingredients :

  • 250 ml of water
  • 20 g cloves
  • 200 ml white alcohol vinegar
  • 10 mothballs (approx. 1 bag)
  • 120 ml 70% alcohol (acts as a preservative)
  • 100 ml dishwashing liquid (optional, for more foam and better fixation).

Preparation:

  1. Boil cloves:   Put the water and cloves in a saucepan. Bring to a boil for about 10 minutes. You will notice that the water changes color due to the cloves and takes on a yellowish hue.
  2. Allow to cool:   After cooking, cover the pan and allow to cool completely.
  3. Add the other ingredients:   In a container, mix vinegar, alcohol and mothballs. Stir until the mothballs begin to dissolve.
  4. Combine everything:   Add the clove-infused water to the vinegar-alcohol mixture. Add dishwashing liquid if necessary to improve the adhesion of the product to surfaces.
  5. Storage:   Pour the solution into a spray bottle or a bottle with a lid. For a scented effect, you can add a few mothballs and wooden sticks to the bottle to create a natural diffuser.

use

  • Against insects:   Spray the mixture in the corners of the house, in closets, in the kitchen and in areas where insects are common. The repellent smell keeps cockroaches, moths and mosquitoes away.
  • Room fragrance:   Use the bottle with wooden sticks to spread a pleasant fragrance throughout the house while repelling insects.

Precautions and Tips

  • Safe handling:   Mothballs can be toxic if inhaled in large quantities. Use gloves when handling the balls and avoid applying the mixture in poorly ventilated areas.
  • Replacement:   If you prefer not to use mothballs, you can replace them with products such as “Evita Mofo”, which also repel insects and combat mold.
  • Odor neutralization:   If the smell of mothballs is too strong, wash your hands with lemon dish soap or use vinegar to neutralize the smell.
